Screen Sharing Blue Dot Indicator

Hello,

Recently MacOs started included these screen sharing status menus and now also a little blue dot indicator in the upper right corner of external displays.

Killing the Control Center app in Activity Monitor removes the sharing menu and the dot.

I can add a kill CC script on startup to do this but is there a better way to stop this occurrence of the blue dot?

Realizing this is a MacOS "Feature" will Millumin 5 keep doing this as well?

The blue dot is really annoying.

  • Hello @Jesse,

You can disable this dot (and other dots) since Sonoma. More info in this article.

Did I answer your question ?

  • Hello @Jesse,

I just tested with macOS 15.3 and lastest 15.4.1 : it works fine.

Are you sure you activated the option ? See image below :

Just an update on your settings, @Philippe, hope this helps, @Jesse: This caused me some headache, as I was not seeing the toggle Philippe had for Privacy Indicators!

The toggle for "Privacy Indicators" is not shown on a standard MacOS setup and needs to be activated via a Terminal Command through Recovery Mode:

Here the steps - worked like a charm:

In macOS, privacy indicators (green or orange dots) show when your camera or microphone is in use. You can hide these indicators on external displays when in full-screen mode using macOS Recovery and a specific command. This hides the indicator on the external display but the indicator will still appear on the main display.

Here's how to hide the privacy indicators on external displays in macOS Sonoma 14.4 and later:

    1. Start Up from macOS Recovery:
      • Apple silicon: Hold the power button until startup options appear.
      • Intel-based Mac: Hold Command (⌘) + R during startup.
    2. Open Terminal: In macOS Recovery, go to Utilities > Terminal.
    3. Enter the command: Type system-override suppress-sw-camera-indication-on-external-displays=on and press Enter.
    4. Restart your Mac: Go to the Apple menu > Restart.
    5. Adjust Privacy Settings: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera (or Microphone). You can then turn off the privacy indicators for the camera or microphone.

    Best,

    Michael

P.S. This also removes the blue dot - which indicates that a screen is actually mirrored! This was the case for our external led panels.

  • As stated in my previous message, we wrote an article about it.
