Looping / Fading in Timeline (1 Hour Timeline with synced Cues and Intro)

Hey there! I have a particular use case

  1. Intro (Looping Clip that is around 30 Minutes long so the audience can come in)
  2. 5 sec Fade into ->
  3. Main Show - 60 Minutes with various MSC, DMX and Video tracks synced to the audiotrack

I cannot quite wrap my head around how to best do this. I was thinking it would be the Ideal case for running the show from timeline only, but with a synced timeline I cannot do a smooth fade and with an async timeline the main track might drift from the other events.

I was thinking about using segments for the various cues instead but then I cannot seem to drop the timeline into the dashboard with each segment automatically running into the next without the audio constantly transitioning.

What would you suggest? Is there a good elegant way to do this without odd workarounds?

thank you!

  • Hello @sonarkon,

    I see 2 approaches :

    • one timeline for the intro then the main-show : use a black layer above the other layers to do your fade
    • create a timeline for your main-show, and a second one with the intro then the first timeline embed inside

  • With this you would suggest using two Clips in a dashboard? That would prevent me from running datatracks in sync to the audiotrack.

And if I embed the timeline 1 into timeline 2 - The thing is that I will need to (audio) fade from one timeline to the other but the main timeline would also contain all the datatracks. When I use the „next segment button“ with a synced timeline it creates a hard cut.

  • You can use the second approach with a single segment : use the intro feature to do so.

  • im not quite sure. Because that would mean playing everything from the dashboard with an async timeline? Like the first half hour should just play until I go into CUE 1 - the length is not fixed and I would need a way to seamlessly blend between the segments without using an unsynced playlist.

  • just for clarification.

  • Hello @sonarkon,

Ok, I see now, the length of your intro / loop 1 is not fixed.

    • If you want to fade-out then fade-in : a simple method would be to use a MIDI controller for example, to fade-out your intro / loop 1, then go to the next segment to start your show with data-track and audio.

    • If you want to crossfade between your intro / loop 1 and your show with data-track and audio : I do not see a solution to run your content in timeline-mode, you need the dashboard (2 columns, one for the intro / loop 1 and one for show with data-track and audio). Unless you run 2 instances of Millumin, but this is not convenient.

  • thank you! the second option would work for us - I was just thinking that Timelines are not allowed to send data when they are in a dashboard - but I supposed this now works in V5 :)
