Audio at beginning
Hi, guys
I'm using Millumin 4.18.k on macOS Ventura 13.7.6.
When triggering a sound effect cue, I’ve noticed that the very beginning of the audio is always cut off during playback.
How long does it take for a .wav file to be preloaded in Millumin (from decoding to actual playback) when a cue is triggered?
Since I need to use sound effects, I added a 0.1-second margin at the beginning of the .wav file, and that seems to solve the issue.
From my testing, a margin of at least 0.06 seconds seems to be necessary for reliable playback.
But I want to minimize the margin as much as possible.
How many seconds of margin would you recommend adding at the beginning of an audio file?

Hello @Sarah,
A few questions to better understand the situation :
Best. Philippe
Hi, Philippe
I’m using a WAV file, and even when I set my Mac Studio correctly in the audio routing settings, the issue still happens.
Of course, I also tested it with Millumin 5, but the same thing occurs.
Just to be sure, I tried playing the same file in Watchout — and just like in Millumin, the beginning of the audio gets cut off unless I add a 0.06-second padding at the start of the file.
Interestingly, in QLab, the same file plays fine without any padding — the beginning doesn’t get chopped off at all.
So I’m wondering: could this be due to the difference in how audio and video programs handle playback?
(For example, maybe QLab fully loads audio files before playback, whereas video-based software might start loading the file only when the cue begins?)
Hello @Sarah,
Please send us a minimal project (the .millumin + the .wav file) via email. We will open a ticket.
Thank you. Philippe
I've just sent you the email, Philippe.
Thanks!
