Delay between image and audio [SOLVED]

edited February 11 in MAIN

Hello,

I have a problem of synchronization between the image and the audio on a video projection for a live theater show.

The video and audio source are both from the same mov file.

Here are the technical specs:

  • Millumin version is 4.18.i
  • MacBook Air M1 2020 8G RAM
  • mov file resolution is 1920 × 1080
  • Video image projected with Optoma EH470 plugged with HDMI cable
  • Sound output: Macbook plugged with Mini-jack (3,5mm) to a Soundcraft audio mixer and then plugged with XLR to 2 Mackie Thump 215 stéreo speackers.

When I play the file on the computer with millumin, using the computer sreen and listening with the computer speakers there is no synchronisation problem. When I plugg it to the video projector and to the audio système I have a delay between the image and the audio!

Any ideia?

Best regards,

Rafael

  • Hello @Houdini,

It looks like that the processing time for the video and the audio is different : is the audio late (in comparison of the video) ? What is this delay : 1 second ? 50 ms ?

Be sure to check the latency of your sound system. If needed, you can add a delay your your video outputs in Millumin/Outputs. See this article.

  • Hi there Philippe,

I've tried that but unfortunately the problem remained the same...the image was allways late in comparison to the audio! The delay was less than a 1 second.

I've tried without plugging it to the sound system, and having the sound coming directly from the computer.

The only solution that I could find that worked, was by editing the video and putting the image a second before the audio on the timeline.

    Thanks any way.

  • Hello @Houdini,

From what I understand, the audio does not have any delay, but the video has ~1 second of delay. And if you only connect the audio to the sound system, but output the video to your computer's screen, there is no delay between the two. Is that right ?

If so, the problem looks like between the computer and the videoprojector.

Does the problem happen if you play the audio from computer's speakers, but output to the videoprojector ?

Does the problem happen if you play a video with Quicktime ?

  • Hi,

So, I've tried all of your proposals and I finnally realize that the problem happens beetwen the computer and the videoprojector. I use a Belkin hub to connect the HDMI with the USB c port of the computer. Is it possible that the latency come from this adapter? If so, is there another way that you know of to connect the HDMI to a mac that has no HDMI port?

    Thank you for your answer.

    Hello @Houdini,

    Thank you for the info.

I never heard about a latency coming from a Thunderbolt/HDMI adaptater, however, be sure you are using an activate adaptater (see this video).

By the way : are you sure you did not add some delay inside your projector or in Millumin ?

    Best. Philippe
