Fast Dimmers creates video/light delays when using ableton and max.

Hello Philippe,

I am a Millumin user since 2015 and I happily use it since then.

I progressively made my projects bigger adding lights leap motion, osc, etc… I use millumin with max on ableton live sending live midi informations from ableton to control mapping and lights

I am facing a problem since a moment :

When i do complex or fast dimmer variations (lights/video) and i stop sending something with ableton , everything is delayed and the data continues to flow. This is not happening all the time, but often enough to make me avoid to go 100% free on what i do. Tested on millumin 4 and 5.

Is it due to the limitations of the hardware or software ?

I was using a macbookpro 2015 high sierra, but now I am using a

MacBook Pro (16 pouces, 2021), Apple M1 Pro, Mémoire 16 Go on Monterey.

Ableton 12 (but i got the same problems on v11)

One projector 720p and a entecDMX usb device.

the videos are 8 sec long + has been converted to HAP format 1080p.

here is a link to the millumin project, a midi file to send into the millumin project + a video of the problem.

tell me if you need the original videos or ableton project

Thank you for your concern.

  • Hello @djibrilmusic,

Sorry but I am not sure to understand your setup (the Google Drive contains only an Ableton project).

Do you control Millumin with Ableton ? To launch/stop columns ?

And when the problem happens when you stop a cue in Ableton : it should stop the column right away in Millumin, but it is delayed by a few seconds ?

    Best. Philippe

  • Sorry for this mistake, i added the millumin project to the drive !

(Videos I am using are in column 41 of the millumin project)

    To answer your quesitons :

    • I am using ableton/max to send midi to millumin.
    • Midi controls Millumin's parameters as launch/stop columns, lights (colors/dimmers) and videos opacity.

The problem is when I send midi from ableton to millumin to make lights and mapping variations, sometimes it works, sometimes millumin seems to receive or interpret data with delay. I cannot find a reason of the randomness of this problem.

    • Ableton sound is not lagging, cpu seems ok.
    • it happens when i do fast variations.
  • Hello @djibrilmusic,

    Thank you for the project.

Well, I found more than 600 MIDI interactions in your project ! Some are the same MIDI signal controlling 32 layers at the same time. For sure, you can flood Millumin this way, so it takes time for the software to process all this interactions in realtime.

Also, I guess your project is hardly manageable : if you want to change something, you probably have to change many of your 600 interactions ...

Would not be possible to simplify your project (since your repeat the same effects on 32 layers) ? For example with timelines, or by using Syphon between canvases (first canvas for content, second canvas for global effects) ?

Also, upcoming features such as Python scripts or layer-groups might help you to simplify your project.

    Best. Philippe

  • Hello !

Well, this project is an adaptive one. I am using sliced videos, so I can adapt each universes I create on any type of surfaces/videos/mappings. I'll try to make something more simple next time !

Thank you for your answer !

    Gabriel.

    Ps :

I'll be happy to make a video to talk about what I do on this site, do you think it would be possible ?

  • Hello @djibrilmusic,

Yes, I understood this by reading your project, but I guess you need to change it a bit so it could be manageable and playable.

See attached project where I separated the renders : one for your slices, one for the effects. This way, you will have far less interactions to create as well as a more friendly project :
