Replacing Preload movie option which disappeard on new version

Hello is there an option of the "old" preload movie trick on 4.18.j version ?

I run a project with 1080p AppleProRes medias, 3840 X 2160, 25 p output and even if the system is less than 30 % active, there is a tiny freeze each time launch the next column...

There are some masks with feather but less than 4 layers and few effects and as I wrote, the system seems very quite...

Thanks

  • We are also seeing the momentary judder/frame skip when triggering high-bitrate media files.

We believe it's due to SSD latency.

@Millumin it would be fantastic to have an option to pre-load a user-defined amount of initial frames of EVERY media used in a project, including all media used in timelines, transitions etc.

Most of our machines have 64GB+ of RAM, which is a shame not to exploit in order to eliminate the frame-skipping when triggering high-bitrate media.

Other media server platforms have supported this type of user-defined preloading for a long time.

  • Hello @FredLaFA & @ectoplasmosis,

This "force preload movie" option was not doing what you think it was. It was just allowing to prepare some more movies, but it was not efficient, thus the implementation changed, thus the checkbox was removed.

Indeed, using more RAM is (very) probably not the solution to your issue. Unfortenatly, playing back movies is more complex than that. And I guess the term "preload" can be confusing as it means a lot of thing : opening the file, initializing the decoder, seeking to the first frame, preloading some audio, prerolling some frames, synchronizing timeclocks, ...

In other words, looking at RAM or CPU usage will not point where the bottleneck is. It is somewhere else.

Could you test your project with latest Millumin V5 beta (5.12.g) ? How it behaves ? This could give us important hints to understand your issue. Lastly, do not hesitate to contact us via email, as we may need to ask you some personal infos such as your project or media files.

    Thank you. Philippe
